The Euro Key can be used in numerous European countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, and the Netherlands. Many accessible public toilets in Scandinavian countries, as well as in Italy and Spain, are also equipped for use with this special key.

Living with a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis often means having to carefully plan your day. Sudden, urgent trips to the bathroom can shape your daily routine and make it difficult to be spontaneous when out and about. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a shopping trip, or a spontaneous day out—any of these can quickly become stressful when you’re unsure where the next toilet is. In moments like these, the Euro Key offers real relief and flexibility.
What is the Euro Key?
The Euro Key is a special universal key that grants access to accessible public toilets across Europe. It was initiated by the Club for the Disabled and Their Friends in Darmstadt and Surrounding Areas (CBF e.V.) and is intended for people with various disabilities and chronic illnesses who need urgent access to restrooms.
What are the benefits of the Euro Key?
The key allows you to access a suitable toilet immediately—no need to ask, explain, or search. It unlocks more than 12,000 accessible toilets across Europe, providing independent and free access to facilities at highways, train stations, pedestrian zones, museums, and public buildings.
Is there an app to locate accessible toilets?
Yes! Several apps help you quickly find accessible toilets nearby. A great example is Wheelmap, a free app that maps accessible locations around the world—including toilets that can be accessed using the Euro Key.
How can I get a Euro Key?
People with special needs, including IBD patients, can apply for the Euro Key through CBF Darmstadt e.V. The key is only issued to individuals who genuinely need access to accessible toilets. If you live with IBD, you qualify as part of this group.
To apply, you’ll need to provide proof—either a medical certificate or a disability ID.
A one-time fee of €28.90 applies.
